In a secured computer lab, a girl recently spent 15 minutes bitching really loudly about how nobody would open the door for her, and she had to go “all the way” back to her car to get her ID. She insisted it was “so rude,” and “the least people could do,” and that “nobody would bite or anything.”
This is on a campus where there were three muggings last month, some of which were armed, in broad daylight.
So . . . I’m going to go out on a limb and say doors which are locked are locked for a reason. Nobody owes it to you to jeopardize their safety and that of everyone else so that you can save yourself the 30 second walk to your car. Didn’t bring the key? Don’t blame the people who don’t know you and therefore won’t let you in. Remember to bring your key and you won’t have a problem.
It must be nice to never have been mugged or stolen from.

Truth.
i wonder if she’s still complaining about the campus governance infringing on her rights. i take into consideration she’s 15 and has not yet understood she’s not the only one on the face of the Earth.
Sometimes, there are situations where I want to yell common sense into people’s faces. This would have been one of them.
You would have felt bad if she had gotten mugged on her way back to the car…
@The_ATM - Yes, I would have felt bad for her if she had gotten mugged after her own failure to remember her key. I would have felt a lot worse if someone had stupidly opened the door for a stranger and a bunch of people had gotten mugged or pistol-whipped. In the case of a mugging, blame does not rest with her, though, or with the idiot who opens the door. Blame rests with the assailant. Your implication that people protecting themselves ought to feel guilty is misguided.
@TheSutraDude - I have no idea of her actual age, but she looked like she was in her 20s. That aside, even a 15 year old can grasp the idea that a key is needed to open a door, and without it one does not enter.
@moritheil - ha. I was not criticizing you, by implication or otherwise. It is funny how strangers can so easily put you in a lose lose situations, even if fairly insignificant.
@The_ATM - Ah, tone is kind of hard to read sometimes.
